Beyond the Milky Way

Beyond our home galaxy, the Milky Way

Over the past few weeks, I’ve been sharing nebulae from across our cosmic home, then Milky Way Galaxy. Now we’re going to push further out, into intergalactic space.

  • Bode’s Galaxy + the Cigar Galaxy (M81/M82), ~12 million light-years away
  • Pinwheel Galaxy (M101), ~21 million light-years away
  • Whirlpool Galaxy (M51), ~31 million light-years away

Each contains billions of stars, enormous hydrogen clouds, dark dust lanes, and countless stellar nurseries similar to the nebulae scattered throughout our own galaxy. The deeper into the darkness we peer, The further back in time we’re seeing. These galaxies are unimaginably far away, but at the same time, right there in the palm of your hand. Captured from my backyard in New Jersey over multiple nights with the Seestar S50 and S30 Pro.

M82 is especially interesting — it’s a starburst galaxy undergoing unusually intense star formation, likely triggered by gravitational interaction with nearby M81. The Pinwheel Galaxy (M101) is so large and diffuse that its spiral arms are packed with distinct hydrogen regions spread across the disk. And the Whirlpool Galaxy (M51) is actively interacting with its companion galaxy, whose gravity is helping shape and amplify the spiral structure.

In other words: the same kinds of star-forming processes visible in nebulae inside our own galaxy are happening here too — just on scales involving hundreds of billions of stars instead of one local cloud
