Cherry Springs Expedition · Draft

Subject Plan

Six observing plans for two nights at Cherry Springs: October 12–13 and October 13–14, 2026. Each plan below provides framing, target notes, and a sky-path preview using the Cherry Springs site.

Telescope assignments by night

These are working plans. The schedules and sky previews below currently use October 12 evening through October 13 morning as their reference night; Night 2 has not yet been recalculated. The shared timeline compares the observing programs, while the table above assigns them to each night.

Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC1396)

Wide-field survey subjects · Oct 12, 7:40 PM EDT → Oct 12, 9:10 PM EDT · 90 min

Elephant Trunk and Giant Squid/flying Bat will ultimately contribute to a 2 panel mosaic, extending to also include seahorse and fireworks galaxy.

Cherry Springs · Sky coverage

13 registered Milky Way cutouts · 28 visible frames. Toggle plans, select a frame, or drag and zoom to explore. Blank areas have no cutout coverage.

Oct 12, 6:34 PM EDT → Oct 13, 7:21 AM EDT. Move the slider to see the ground directions change across the fixed star map. Colored guides follow N/E/S/W above the horizon; the dashed line is the geometric horizon. Labels include their altitude. Guides outside this map’s bounds are omitted.

Not visible in this mosaic

These scheduled frames do not overlap the Milky Way cutouts within the displayed declination range.

  • NGC6340 · Tight-frame subjects (Broadband)
Select a frame for its plan, schedule, and notes.

NSNS / DSS survey imagery, reprojected from the configured cutouts. North-polar stereographic projection preserves local shapes; scale increases toward the southern edge. RA radiates from the pole and declination follows circles. Outlines follow the same projection. Planet markers and fields use their positions at scheduled start. This is a planning map, not a calibrated science mosaic.

Where will the telescopes point?

Pointing directions · 3D

Pyramids radiate from the observer toward each occupied direction and altitude bin. Colors match the plans above; stronger shading means more telescope-hours. These are conceptual viewing volumes, not exact telescope FOV footprints.

Horizon = 0° · overhead = 90°. The rings mark 30° and 60° altitude. The amber dashed ring marks the 25° low-altitude warning threshold. Drag the dome or use the sliders to rotate. Tap an outer face to pin all sessions in that direction and altitude bin.

Hover or focus a face to preview its sessions; tap to pin the tooltip. Escape or tapping outside dismisses it.

One-minute samples grouped into 22.5° compass sectors and 15° altitude bands. Pyramid faces span each bin, not the optical field of a rig. Night weighting matches the 2D chart. Below-horizon samples appear below the horizon ring; terrain and obstructions are not modeled here.

Observing time by compass direction · 2D

Observing time by compass direction Each ring measures 2 telescope-hours. Plans are stacked by color. This chart measures time, not altitude. NNNENEENEEESESESSESSSWSWWSWWWNWNWNNW 2h4h6h8h10h

78.3 telescope-hours

Longer bars mean more scheduled observing time in that direction. Colors show how each plan contributes. Hover, focus or tap a segment to see its subjects and sessions.

The busiest sectors are S (8.5h), E (8.3h), NNW (8.2h).

Each schedule is weighted by its configured observing nights. Simultaneous telescope time adds together. Repeated nights use the reference schedule’s pointing directions; their target positions have not been recalculated.

Directions are sampled every minute in 22.5° sectors. This shows time, not altitude or obstruction clearance.

Wide-field survey subjects

This survey will run on WideSky both nights; first capturing HA/OIII with L-eXtreme, the SII/OIII with the svbony sv220 SII filter, allowing full Hubble/SHO processing for these wide regions. IRCUT/continuum data will also be captured, where most relevant, by the Seestars.

Elephant Trunk Nebula (IC1396)

Elephant Trunk and Giant Squid/flying Bat will ultimately contribute to a 2 panel mosaic, extending to also include seahorse and fireworks galaxy.
